STD Testing Q & A

What are STDs/STIs?

Sexually transmitted diseases/infections, or STDs/STIs, are spread through sexual contact. They’re caused by bacteria, a virus, or another type of microscopic organism. Many STIs have no symptoms but spread easily.

STD/STI testing is available for some of the most common infections, including:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • HPV (human papillomavirus), including genital warts
  • HIV
  • Pubic lice/crabs
  • Syphilis
  • HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)
  • Herpes
  • Hepatitis C
  • Trichomoniasis

Some STDs/STIs clear up with antibiotic treatment while others may not be cured, but their symptoms managed.

What is STI testing?

STI testing uses a sample of your blood, urine, or saliva, or a swab from your genitals, to check for infection. Results are ready within one to three business days. Testing for HIV, hepatitis C, and syphilis is done using a finger poke. Results are ready within 20 minutes.

The team at Canopy Medical Clinic tries to accommodate same-day STD testing appointments and usually accepts walk-ins if time is available.

Following the confidential testing, the team provides counseling, so you know how to manage your diagnosis.

Who needs STI testing?

Anyone sexually active can develop an STD and thus benefits from testing. The team recommends yearly testing. If you have multiple partners and often participate in unprotected sex, test more often.

You should also come in for STD testing if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Sores, blisters, or warts in the genital area
  • Pelvic pain that’s not related to your period
  • Unusual vaginal or penile discharge
  • Pain when urinating or blood in the urine
  • Abnormal vaginal spotting or bleeding

Even if these symptoms go away on their own, you should still get a test. Infections linger until you get treated and can cause complications, including pain, internal scarring, and infertility.

Is STI testing expensive?

HIV testing offered at Canopy Medical Clinic is completely free. Other testing, for diseases, including chlamydia and gonorrhea, is low-cost. The practice partners with state programs to offer reduced-cost STD testing. If you have insurance, testing is usually covered.

We’ve got you covered! Safe sex supplies, including dental dams, male/female condoms, and lubrication are always available for free at Canopy Medical
